How to read a tip

Every Punting Gods tip fits on one small card. Here's what each part means, what the odds pay, and how to read the stars.

The god

Odds
The decimal price when we posted the tip (see below).
Stars
How strongly the god backs the tip, from 3 to 5.
Market and pick
What the bet is on – e.g. Line: Athens Owls +3.5.
Reason
A sentence or two on why the god likes it.
Kick-off
Shown in your local time, with a live countdown. Tips lock at kick-off.
Posted
When the tip went up, and a reminder that the odds are as at posting.

The markets we tip

Head to head

Pick the winner. That's it. Athena calls head-to-head winners, and Poseidon takes the outsiders (odds of 2.00 or more). If a game ends in a draw, your bookmaker's rules decide what happens.

Line (handicap)

One team gets a head start in points. Athens Owls +3.5 wins if the Owls win, or lose by 3 or fewer. Sparta Stallions −3.5 wins only if Sparta win by 4 or more. Ares handles the lines.

Total points (over/under)

Ignore who wins – it's about the combined score. Over 43.5 wins if the two teams score 44 or more between them; Under 43.5 wins on 43 or fewer. Hermes reads the totals.

Props & specials

Bets on players or moments rather than the result – like a player's yards or who scores first. Apollo takes these.

What decimal odds pay

Decimal odds tell you what comes back for every $1 you bet, including your stake. To work out your return, multiply your stake by the odds.

Worked example

You put $10 on a tip at odds of 2.10.

  • If it wins: $10 × 2.10 = $21.00 back – your $10 stake plus $11.00 profit.
  • If it loses: you lose your $10.
What a $10 bet returns if it wins
OddsTotal backProfit
1.50$15.00$5.00
1.91$19.10$9.10
2.10$21.00$11.00
3.00$30.00$20.00

Shorter odds (closer to 1.00) usually mean a favourite; longer odds mean an outsider with a bigger payout. Odds move. The price on each card is the one available when we posted the tip, so always check the current price with your Australian-licensed bookmaker before you bet.

What the stars mean

Stars show how strongly the god backs a tip. Nothing more complicated than that.

  • Three stars. The god likes it.
  • Four stars. Strongly backed.
  • Five stars – the Oracle's pick. Zeus's rare top call.

We only publish tips rated three stars and up, and never more than two per game, so plenty of games get no tip at all. Stars aren't a promise: even five-star tips lose. Every tip is an opinion, not a guarantee.

Countdowns, locks and withdrawn tips

  • Kicks off in 2d 5h: the countdown to kick-off, in your local time. It pulses in the final hour.
  • Locked · In play: the game has started, so the tip is locked. It stays on the page for a few hours, then drops off.
  • Posted 3h ago · Odds at time of posting: when the tip went up. Tips aren't edited after they're posted.
  • Withdrawn: if late team news changes the picture before kick-off, we mark the tip as withdrawn (usually with a short note) instead of quietly deleting it. Don't bet on a withdrawn tip.
